This is an original 19th-century ferrotype (also known as a tintype) depicting a seated gentleman in formal attire. The portrait shows him resting one arm on an ornately carved table, dressed in a dark frock coat with waistcoat and bow tie. The image is hand-tinted, with delicate painted highlights to the face, clothing, and background, a technique popular in the mid-to-late 1800s to bring photographs to life.

Ferrotypes were produced by creating a direct positive image on a thin sheet of lacquered metal, making them durable and affordable for everyday sitters during the Victorian era. This example retains rich tonal quality with period-correct attire, and its slightly worn edges and surface marks are consistent with age.

Dimensions: Approx. [8.5" x 6.75"]
Condition: Light surface wear and corner wear, typical of antique ferrotypes. No cracks or major loss.

A fine example of 19th-century photographic history—an evocative piece for collectors of early photography or Victorian memorab
